Reasons to Take CME Courses Online

There are many reasons to take continuing medical courses. Some countries require so many CME credits per year while some jobs require you to complete at least one course every year. Whatever your reasons, you’ve decided to take a course. You can either physically attend the course or you can take it online. Online courses are preferred by many doctors for a few similar reasons.

A good reason for taking CME courses online is convenience, of course. Many physical locations are limited to normal business hours, which means you would have to close your practice to attend the course. This causes you to lose money in two ways, the cost of the class and the loss of patients. Online classes however can be completed at your leisure. If you have 10 minutes between appointments or can’t sleep, you could get online and do some of the course work.

Another good reason to take CME courses online, maybe even the best reason, is price. If you were to attend a course at a local university for example, you would have to pay tuition, purchase books, and pay for travel expenses. Online courses completely eliminate some, if not all, of those costs. The British Medical Journal offers selected CME courses for free, eliminating tuition. If you aren’t a member of the the BMJ, then it is still less expensive to do online courses. Many online courses include the textbooks as part of the tuition. They do this because the textbook has been uploaded to the Internet and all you do is download it to your computer. There are no additional travel costs with online courses because you do the course work where ever you want.

A third reason for doing CME courses online is location. The foremost expert in your field may be offering a course in New Zealand that you would love to attend but you are in Britain. You have three choices then; take the course online, wait and hope the expert comes to Britain, or fly to New Zealand. Most doctors are too busy to seriously consider flying to another count to attend a CME course. If you’re very lucky, the expert may come to Britain soon. But why wait? Many experts now offer online versions of their CME courses.
