Getting a Medical Education in the UK
January 24, 2010 on 5:07 am | By admin | In Health | Comments OffThose who are interested in getting a medical education in the UK must begin the process by becoming accepted into one of the recognized medical schools that are available in that country. There are approximately 28 such schools to choose from, each with their own requirements for admissions.
Admissions into medical school in the United Kingdom are handled through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Students can choose up to four medical schools to apply to, as well as one non-medical course. It can be very competitive, and many times students must also sit for entrance tests. The two most common are the BioMedical Admissions Test and the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test. Only the best applicants will be able to get into one of the schools of their choice, and those with any infectious diseases are usually not admitted to this type of course.
Once accepted into one of the medical schools, the first step of a medical education (getting a degree) takes from four to six years, depending on the school and whether or not the medical student has a previous degree already. Degree options include the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Obstetrics.
Degree programs include a mix of courses split between theoretical and clinical learning. Subject areas include such things as anatomy, biochemistry, ethics, physiology, psychology, medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and surgery. The topics covered are similar to those that would be covered in any medical school in any country. Some schools focus more on lecture based learning while others focus more on problem based learning, so it is advisable to see what schools take which approach so you can choose the one that suits you the best.
After completing a degree program, a doctor will usually get provisional registration so that they can get further medical education while getting further clinical education and holding the position of resident junior house officer in a hospital or approved clinic. Once this training is completed they can apply for full registration so that they can work anywhere without supervision.
