A Chlamydia Test is a Good Idea
January 15, 2010 on 11:08 pm | By admin | In Health | Comments OffThe best way to describe Chlamydia is like a yeast infection on steroids. Chlamydia isn’t an innocent STD though, not only is it very uncomfortable, but it can cause serious damage if not treated. Probably the most dangerous part of the condition is that the symptoms are difficult to detect. Because the symptoms are so difficult to know, it’s very important to get a chlamydia test each year since early detection can be the difference between solving the problem and allowing it to snowball into something serious. As with any disease, knowing is half the battle to gaining a solution.
One of the most important reasons to get an annual chlamydia test, is so that complications such as Pelvic inflammatory disease. This particular disease can get out of control very quickly and scar the fallopian tubes which in turn makes it really hard to conceive a baby. If a baby is lucky enough to be conceived, the scare of an ectopic pregnancy is pretty high. If a woman ends up with this disease while pregnant, it really increases the risk of premature birth and the baby could end up with conjunctivitis or even worse, a pneumonia associated with the Chlamydia.
Anyone who is under 25 and sexually active needs to have a chlamydia test taken every year. Additionally in the event of a change in partners, both partners should be tested. Chlamydia is such a sneaky parasite that it can hide undetected for quite a while, and in the meantime it is working to get deep into the cells where it can do the most damage. The idea of going to a doctor for any STD test can be embarrassing, some like to avoid talking to their personal doctor by going to an alternative like Planned Parenthood, or a government run clinic.
The chlamydia test is something not to be feared. The test is done by taking a sample of fluid from the infected area. There are several different types of tests, but all use pretty much the same methods. For women, the most effective is to get a swab from the cervix, while for men a urine sample works great. The sample is then sent to a lab and cultured to check for the chlamydia DNA. The good news is that when it is found early enough, a simple treatment with an antibiotic such as Zithromax will clear up the problem for good. Getting tested can really solve a problem before it gets to big.
