Why do I have acne? When will it go?

Acne sufferers will often ask themselves the question: Why do I have acne? as getting to the cause of a problem will often lead to a solution. So before we answer the question “when will it go” we should discuss the cause.

Acne is caused by hormonal change. It is these changes in hormone levels that cause the sebaceous gland in the hair follicle of the skin to start producing more sebum. Sebum is an essential oil that the skin needs to perform all its natural functions and stay healthy but too much sebum makes the skin greasy and the skin can often not release all this oil to the surface of the skin meaning that some of it gets trapped below the surface and the follicle starts to swell. Which is when acne symptoms occur. So that is the answer to the question: “Why do I have acne?”

Now the next part of the question “when will it go?” can be split down into two parts. Firstly, when will the root cause of acne go so that acne is no longer a problem. Because the cause of acne is hormone change, for acne to go away naturally that hormone change would need to stop. In pregnancy this is can be after the first trimester. In teenage acne this is when the rapid growth stage has finished.

The second part of the question can be “when will the symptoms go?” And this is slightly more positive as the root cause of acne is rarely curable but there are acne treatments that will rid you of the symptoms. That way you will not have to ask yourself: Why do I have acne?
