The Constituents and Uses of Senna Leaf and Pods
March 17, 2010 on 4:08 am | By admin | In Health and Fitness | Comments OffSenna Leaf and pods have been used as a laxative for centuries. It possesses a mix of sweet and bitter tastes and the active constituents of the leaves and pods are anthraquinones, including four sennosides including the rhein dianthrones and the rhein aloe-emodin heterodianthrones.
Senna also contains a small amount of dianthrone glycosides, another form of anthraquinone, and some other minor glycosides. There is also around 10% mucilage in the form of galactose, arabinose and galacturonic acid and several other carbohydrates. There are also several other minor constituents including flavonols, saponin and some others.
Doctors recommend taking senna to treat constipation, both mild and acute. They recommend it to be used to empty the bowels before X-rays, and also before abdominal, rectal and hemorrhoidal surgery, particularly the latter two where a soft stool is needed to prevent damaging sutures. There are few doubts over its effectiveness in alleviating constipation, although excessive doses can cause severe abdominal cramps.
Senna is a good aid for alleviating constipation but should not be taken for more than four to six days straight. Prolonged consumption of senna can cause the intestinal tract to become dependent. To prevent dependency, one should boost dietary fiber while on senna. Fiber will promote normal elimination and restore proper bowel function.
Senna leaf is available at your local health food store in tablet, capsule, powder, liquid, and tea forms. No matter what form you choose, senna will work, and work well. Always choose name brands like Solaray and Now Foods to ensure you purchase a good quality senna product to help alleviate constipation.
