Soap making is becoming a popular hobby nowadays because it does not only provide fun, learning, and enjoyment, but at the same time, a useful product is made after this activity, which is soap. You can use it personally, give it as a gift to family and friends, or engage in a soap making business. If you are creative and inclined in arts and crafts, soap making is definitely one activity that you will have fun engaging in. Being able to create your own soap gives a feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction. An advantage of soap making among other hobbies is that you create a useful product and at the same time, you exercise your creativity and have fun at the same time. It is also a venue for experimentation, because you can combine different fragrances to create your own soap scent. Before engaging in soap making, it is important to familiarize yourself of the various methods. This way, you could choose a process which best matches your skill and resources. These are the different methods in making soap: cold process, hot process, re-batching, and melt and pour. The most complicated soap making process is the cold process because it involves making soap from scratch and a detailed step-by-step procedure should be followed carefully. If you want to try this process, you need to prepare the three basic soap ingredients: oil, water, and lye.Lye is also known as caustic soda, which is a corrosive and scathing strong base. This chemical should be handled with care and caution. Therefore, if you will do the cold process, you should be very careful in handling chemicals and following the procedure, and you should wear the proper protective outfit and gear such as laboratory gown, gloves, and goggles.  The hot process, on the other hand, is relatively easier to perform even if the procedure involves all the soap components to be heated in a pot with continuous stirring. You should continue to stir until the soap enters various stages. If the soap reaches the point where it has a uniform gel-like consistency with a waxy texture, you can now add the color and fragrance that you want. After mixing all the soap ingredients, you can transfer the soap mixture into molds with different shapes. The melt and pour method is considered as the easiest among the soap making techniques because all you have to do is heat and melt a bar of soap in a microwave or double boiler. While the soap is melting, add the essential oils, fragrances, or other special ingredients that you want such as oatmeal or rose petals. After melting, pour the soap mixture into molds and allow to it solidify. Another soap method is the re-batching method which is similar to the melt and pour method. In this method, ready made soap bars are grated and melted with a small amount of water. Additional ingredients are added while the grated soap is being melted. You can add oils, fragrances, and colors. After melting, pour the mixture into molds and allow it to set.
