Is Holistic Chiropractic Care Helpful For Back Pain Relief

In a recent survey of back pain sufferers, the results of chiropractic care for lower back pain weren’t especially impressive, falling far short of physical medicine and other disciplines for offering back pain relief.

Too often, chiropractic care left low back sufferers dissatisfied because (1) improvement was short-lived; (2) patients were in constant need of additional treatments – with no end in sight; and (3) the vast majority of patients were not helped to reach what presumably was their ultimate goal: self-sufficiency, or knowing how to take care of themselves in the long run.

However, these disadvantages did not apply to total chiropractic care (as opposed to manipulation alone) for neck pain. Here, results were generally more lasting. Most patients completed their treatments in less than eight weeks. And nearly half of all patients learned how to prevent pain from recurring.

Massage Therapists Are Remarkably Effective at Providing Substantive, Temporary Back Pain Relief

Seventeen of nineteen US survey participants reported a 90 per cent chance of getting badly needed neck and back pain relief from Swedish massage. Most individuals who received Swedish massage for neck pain got one or two full days of relief.

This contrasts sharply with the effect of Swedish massage on upper back pain – where a lower percentage of people were helped and where only a few hours’ relief was the norm. And neck pain sufferers, who are dealt additional pain all too often by a variety of practitioners, reported ‘no harm done’ even when the massage brought no relief.

Shiatsu, or acupressure massage, was tried by four survey participants with neck pain. And the results, though statistically insignificant, were promising. Three of the four got enough temporary relief to further their progress, and the other reported dramatic, long-term relief after five treatments.
