Ginseng and Stress
April 3, 2010 on 6:08 am | By admin | In Health and Fitness | Comments OffGinseng can be used to help those suffering stress and depression through its action on the brain. There is an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), known as corticotrophin that has a stimulating effect on the adrenal cortex in the brain. It specifically stimulates the production of cortisol and other glucocorticoids that possess stress management properties and is secreted from the pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). The cortisol that is the ultimate product from the effects of CRH and ACTH then inhibits CRH which in turn inhibits stress.
This is a classic negative feedback loop, much like a home heating system, where the boiler (CRH) generates hot water (ACTH) that produces heat (cortisol) that switches off the thermostat (stress). Ginseng increases the activity of the ACTH so that cortisol production is more efficient and so stress is reduced faster.
In fact, ginseng is believed to be so effective in supporting the adrenal gland during stress that it is frequently administered to patients by injection to raise the level of ACTH and help to reduce the incidence of conditions such as Addison’s disease.
Stress affects your immune system, cardiovascular health, and libido. Ginseng can help the body manage and adapt to stress and help the body maintain good health. This wonderful herb can be found at your local or internet vitamin store in capsule, tablet, bulk powder, ad liquid extract forms. Remember to always purchase name brands like Natures way and Solaray to ensure quality, purity, and authenticity of the ginseng herbal supplement you want to purchase.
