Children and pregnant women should steer well clear of malaria hotspots

Malaria is one of the most deadly diseases in the world and is found in areas of the world responsible for housing half of the planet’s population. Half a billion of these people every year will begin to experience the symptoms of Malaria and of this number between one and three million will die from it.

In the western world we are a long way from being in any danger however sometimes for reasons such as work and travel we may have reason to enter parts of the world where we may be in danger of catching this disease. With this being the case there is always the slight chance that we can contract the disease and begin to display malaria symptoms ourselves.  Even an adult who has a strong immune system is still in serious danger of suffering from the disease so it is a fundamental fact that children and pregnant women are in the category of people who should seriously be warned against travelling to a malaria hotspot. The danger that the disease poses to their lives is huge and you only need to watch the appeals on television to see how the malaria disease can take the lives of both mother and unborn child so easily.

It must also surely be the case that children and pregnant women are people that have a choice over whether they travel to a malaria hotspot. There is unlikely to be a burning need for them to travel and families planning holiday for example should think very careful about where they go if travelling to places such as Africa, Asia and Latin America because it is not just a case of packing the right treatment of malaria and knowing a thing or two about malaria symptoms.
