Cayenne Supplements for Pain Relief

Cayenne supplements are used widely to treat pain, digestive complaints and a range of cardiovascular and other internal conditions. Most of these applications utilize the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of cayenne which are imparted on the supplement through its unique blend of active constituents.

The major of these is capsaicin, which is specific to cayenne and others in its family such as chili, capsicum and pimento.  Capsaicinoids in general are members of the vanilloid family, and that which is contained in cayenne offers a number of health benefits.  Take Substance P, as it is known. This is a neuropeptide neurotransmitter, responsible for transmitting tissue damage information to the brain where it is converted into the sensation of pain. It can cause nerve fibers to swell, leading to sinus problems, migraines and headaches.

The capsaicin in cayenne inhibits Substance P, possibly by means of rendering pain nerves more tolerant or reducing their numbers. In so doing, it therefore reduces the pain involved in conditions such as migraines, headaches, fibromyalgia and so on. If you tend to suffer from such forms of pain then cayenne is a good supplement to take.

However, it is important to note that even though cayenne can reduce pain and inflammation, cayenne can also cause severe mucus membrane pain (eyes, Throat, nasal cavity) on contact.  It is advisable that you use with caution when applying it externally with hands.  Make sure that your hands are cleaned very well before itching the eyes. Cayenne can be added to soups like chili to help with flavor and heat.

Cayenne is a wonderful herb available at your local or internet vitamin store. Look for cayenne in liquid extract, capsule, and bulk powder forms.  Always choose name brands like Solaray and Natures Way to ensure quality and purity of the supplement you buy.
