A Better Understanding of Job Related Stress

While stress is often considered something to be avoided, the reality is that a little stress is actually a good thing. Lower levels of stress have been proven to spur along worker productivity. The problem is not necessarily stress but it is the amount of stress. While a small amount of stress is not bad and in fact is helpful, job related stress that is too high could be a disastrous to a worker as well as the business that employs this worker. Another problem is that often times, this sort of stress can go unnoticed, even in situations where the effects of stress are debilitating. That is why it is very important to first understand the signs of stress.
When you are talking about job related stress, the signs are many and they can go from the very minor to the very serious. Some of the more common signs of stress can manifest themselves in the form of headaches, muscle tension, and a feeling of fatigue. Some of the more serious affects of stress can be digestive problems, blurred vision and even elevated heart rates. These more serious side effects can often lead to more complicated and even life threatening health issues if left untreated. In addition, there are many physiological affects that stress can have on a person like a feeling of not being able to go on, mood swings, lowered sex drive, and even entertaining thoughts of suicide.
If you or a co-worker are experiencing any of these signs on a continual basis, you should strongly consider a form of treatment. Fortunately, job related stress can be treated many different ways. For a less formal treatment, sometimes just talking about it can help. You can speak with another worker or perhaps a friend or family member. This may sound simple, but it can be very effective. Self-help is another good way to deal with more mild forms of stress. By making sure your workspace is as organized and comfortable as possible is a good place to start. Also, try to avoid working long hours if at all possible. In addition, try to improve your relationships with your co-workers. In more serious cases, you might want to speak with a therapist about the effect stress in the workplace is having on you. Lastly, especially if you are experiencing serious physical side effects, you may even have medication prescribed to you to help you cope with stress.
Stress is an unfortunate side effect of almost any job, and everyone will have to deal with it in one form or another. However, there are those that will have encounter job related stress that has gone wild. Fortunately, there is hope. Regardless of whether the effects of stress at work are mild or severe, you will first want to identify that stress is an issue. Then you can deal with it accordingly.
